Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week

National Veterinary Technician Week is observed from October 12th-October 18th in 2025.

What is veterinary technician? A veterinary technician is a professional that works under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian; a veterinary technician is skilled and trained in many aspects of the veterinary medical field to provide patient care and client communication services. The veterinary technician handles majority of patient care by fulfilling treatment plans set in place by the veterinarian. Many diagnostics that are ran such as bloodwork, x-rays, urinalysis and so much more are performed by the veterinary technician. Veterinary technicians must complete an AVMA-accredited program to qualify for the VTNE (Veterinary Technician National Exam), through this exam a veterinary technician can become licensed with the state after passing. Veterinary technicians are medical professionals that went to college in order to obtain a degree in science; in these programs veterinary technicians learn through a textbook as well as hands on. The skills veterinary technicians learn through school are put to the test when they take the VTNE.

Did you know, that you cannot legally claim the title of a veterinary technician unless you are licensed? The veterinary technician can do everything in an animal hospital EXCEPT diagnose problems, prescribe medications, and perform surgeries. Many people think of veterinary technicians as an animal nurse; in other parts of the world veterinary nurse is a protected title. Veterinary technicians can be certified, registered, or licensed depending on which state they are licensed with. Veterinary technicians are not only skilled on animal behavior but as well as client communication. When coming through the door clients are usually met by veterinary technicians that ask many questions to gather history in order for the doctor to formulate a treatment plan. Veterinary technicians are also a bridge when communicating between the doctor and clients, they further explain concepts, treatment plans, diseases, and answer any questions that a client may have. During this week we highlight technicians and show how much they are appreciated and valued in the veterinary medical field!
